RIGHT to food

RIGHT to food

ONE GUITAR.

ONE ARTIST.

one SONG.

ONE CAUSE.

The Right To Food Guitar Sessions were born out of an act of great craft and human kindness by master luthier Dave White of DeFaoiteGuitars. Dave is a lifelong Liverpool FC fan and has been a great supporter of the Fans Supporting Foodbanks (FSF) initiative since its inception. He had the lovely idea of handcrafting a beautiful acoustic guitar to donate to FSF for them to raffle, sell or do whatever they chose to do with it.

In fact Dave has now made two beautiful guitars for FSF. The first was raffled off and successfully raised hundreds of pounds for the cause. When he then donated a second guitar, FSF decided it would be good to use this to help raise awareness of the Right To Food Campaign being led by Ian Byrne MP in Parliament, and supported at grassroots level by the entire Fans Supporting Foodbanks network, trade unions, schools, football clubs, religious bodies and more than 25 towns and cities across the UK.

Well-known Liverpool musician and staunch supporter of the campaign Mel Bowen took on the task of recording a song by a range of musicians in support of this vital cause. Mel’s idea was a simple one – to record artists playing a song on what is now called the Right To Food Guitar; to film the artist on his phone and then load each song to a website called The Right To Food Guitar Sessions. And so here we are.

These videos have been deliberately recorded on the hoof - in cafes, street corners, backstage dressing rooms of gigs both big and small, rehearsal rooms, back kitchens or wherever we could engage the artists. As Mel says, the key purpose of this initiative is to raise awareness of the Right To Food Campaign. What can be more important than ensuring that everyone has access to food in the UK, which is, after all, the 6th richest country in the world.

The strength of this project is in the solidarity being shown by musicians of all genres - some household names and others just starting out. The Right To Food Guitar Sessions are about a spirit of humanity - not about sound production or performance.

So please enjoy the videos, share the link to our site, but more importantly, sign up and educate yourself about the Right To Food Campaign and why it’s so needed to help address the issue of food poverty in towns and cities across this country.

And if you know someone who’d like to perform a song on the guitar, send us a message here
